Fun Outdoor Games Kids Can Play
To aid in the mental and physical growth of a preschooler, there are plenty of games kids can play that
helps with the development of a variety of much-needed skills. Here is the continuation of the list of outdoor games kids can play......
Fun Outdoor Games Kids Can PlayWith variations played in Minnesota, Ghana, Czech Republic, Indiana, Bulgaria and many other parts of the world, the classic Duck Duck Goose game is one of the most traditional neighbourhood and outdoor yard games kids can play. As children sit in a circle facing one another, a designated child is chosen "it." Their duty is to walk around the outside of the circle, tapping each child's head – calling out "duck" or "goose." "Ducks" stay put, but a "goose" must get up and chase the "it" person around the circle. It is the goal of the "goose" to tap the "it" person before they are able to sit in the spot left behind by the newly chosen "goose." If the "goose" catches the "it" person, then "it" must sit in the middle of the circle and the "goose" becomes "it." As the game continues, the person in the middle is not allowed to leave their center position until another child is tagged and they are replaced.
To exercise the skills of simple throwing and catching in a spirited outdoor children game, three children stand in line, where the two on the end toss a ball back and forth with the intent of keeping it away from the third. If the child in the middle is able to catch or retrieve a dropped ball, they then become one of the throwers.
Tag is one of those games kids can play that offers a wide range of fun variation and is most definitely one of an outdoor garden games. The basic rules of Tag are some of the simplest. In a reasonably sized backyard, one child is chosen as "it." The object of the game is to run away from the "it" person without being touched. Once a child is touched, they are now "it," and must begin chasing everyone else. This is one of an exhausting outdoor yard games that has been known to last for hours and hours.
This another choice in tag games kids can play, is for the older preschoolers, called Freeze Tag. The chosen "it" person touches a participant, who then must stay "frozen" in their tracks. Tagged children are not allowed to move and must spread their feet apart so other players may "rescue" them. A "frozen" player becomes active again when one of their friends crawls between their legs. Play continues until everyone is "frozen" with the last person frozen becoming "it" for the next round.
In this variation of Tag, two children are selected as "it" and hold hands in order to form a chain that chases the remaining players. When other kids are caught, they become part of the chain and are able to chase others. The game is over until nobody is left. The last two people caught starts off the chain in the next round.
How can we forget the ultimate game of strategy that really gets the heart pumping? To start, a group of children selects someone as the first to "seek" the remaining children, who will hide within a designated area. A home base is also chosen, where the "seeker" closes his or her eyes (often facing a tree or side of a house) and depending on present rules – slowly counts to 10. Once they are finished counting, they will announce, "Ready or not, here I come!" The object of the game is to have the "seeker" find whose hiding so they may tag them before they reach the base. Whoever is tagged, then becomes "it" (the seeker).
While everyone stands in a circle (facing one another), a beanbag is tossed around to each person while someone plays music. Whenever the music stops, the child holding the beanbag in their hands must sit out.
One of a games kids can play to sharpen their skills of deduction is to take part in "I Spy," where one person chooses an object they see outside and gives one clue until someone guesses what they have chosen. The first person to play might say, " I spy something with my little eye and the color is blue" or "I spy something with my little eye and it is shaped like a circle." The person who guesses right gets to choose his or her own object to give a clue on for the next round.
