Fun Games for Teaching the Alphabet

• Alphabet Scarp Book

This is one of the good preschool alphabet activities.

Make a scrapbook for Alphabets, and dedicate each page to a letter.You can get a alphabet letters to print from variuos online games websites, check the preschool online games section or cut out pictures and letters from old magazines and catalogues and stick them in your Alphabet book.

This can be an on going exercise, as and when you come across alphabets and pictures in old magazines you can stick them in out your Alphabet book.

• Labelling Household Items

This is one of a very effective free preschool games. Draw a picture and write the name of the object on a paper and attach the paper to that object in the house.

Label anything and everything you wish. This preschool alphabet activities can familiarise your preschooler with letters so well, as they see letters all around themselves.

You can label table, chairs, doors or even have entry, exit boards above doors.

Just stop once in a while yourself in front of these boards and read the letters loudly as if talking to yourself(it is a bit silly...but as long as your child is learning...who cares) or point out the letters to your child and you can be sure, your 3 year old will do that quite often.

• Alphabet for the day

In this preschool letters game decide a letter for the day or week. Go all out, have a cut out hanging somewhere in the kitchen or anywhere in the house, just at a very visible place for your preschooler.

You can put small stickers on the objects with their names on the objects beginning with letter of the day.Point out as many objects beginning with that letter.

You can go all out of way and even cook meal for the day beginning or having ingredients of the letter of the day and involve your preschooler in the cooking activity.

• Alphabet Hunt

Kids sometimes don't remember only few out of the 26 letters.I had some problems with Adi remembering p, q and v.

This version of scavenger hunt was a very good game for teaching the alphabet he missed out.

Hide some letters around the room and go on a letter hunt.Let your child know what letter is he supposed to find out.

Have clues drawn on small sticky notes and placed at very visible places so that your preschooler can spot them.

And once he finds the letters don't forget to have an applause round.

• Alphabet Books

The age old alphabet books cannot be replaced even though there are lots of other alternatives available today for teaching alphabets to young children.

Research proves that alphabet books help in kids to be independent readers and writers.

• Bath time Alphabets

Get a big jar of foam alphabets and let your young one have fun when in the bath. I find it quite a good game for teaching the alphabet. Try to find letters and stick them on the wall and play some counting games as well with the letters.

Collect some objects from around the house and to play this preschool alphabet activities. Not really a adult type of fun, but you can be sure your kid will love this pretend play.

Collect few items from around the house, like fruits,bread etc. Let your little one know he can buy these from you in exchange of some alphabet currency.For example a bread may cost say 2 x a's and 1 x b.

This is a great activity as it even teaches kids some basic concept of math and money along with alphabets.
