Cool/Gross Stuff Party

My daughter attended a party just recently that was a "gross/cool stuff" for a 5 year old boy who just loves Transformers. Even though most of the guests were boys, his mom did a great job of making it fun for both genders.
They all chose a Transformer character (the birthday boy loves Transformers more than anything in the world) and drew him on a plain white shirt that they got to wear. The purpose of the shirt was to protect their clothes from the volcano that they were going to be making later.
They made a big volcano explode and the guests got to take turns choosing different colors of food coloring to put into the vinegar to make the lava different colors. It was a messy activity but I think she did it outside so clean up wasn't too bad.
The party was quite large (can you imagine sixteen 5-year-olds in a room together?) so my friend had cupcakes instead of a cake to eat. They were easier to distribute than slicing up a cake.
My daughter's favorite part about the party was that she got to decorate her own cupcake. She talked about that for weeks. They divided into two groups, boys in one group and girls in the other. The girls were given food coloring and a bowl of frosting and instructed to make the "prettiest" frosting and the boys were told to make the "grossest" frosting. Both genders really loved this party. It was a little different from most theme parties my daughter has attended, but she loved it so that is the most important thing.
