Popular Kids Board Game - The Candyland Board Game

One of the most popular board games for children is the Candyland board game.

First developed in the 1940’s, the Candyland board game has become the game of choice for children and their parents as the first board game for many young children.

One of the benefits of the Candyland is that it can be played by the very youngest toddler. Because it is a game of luck, anyone can play it.

Children do not have to know how to count or strategize to play this game. The color of the pawn makes no difference and there is no best color. It is simply a game.

It does teach the child about the colors because they have to match the colors with the cards that are drawn so they will know where to land next.

But if you’ve already been talking with your child and pointing out the colors in his or her life, this will be easily accomplished as you transfer this knowledge to a board game.

Of course, the best benefit of all is spending time with your child, finding out what makes him or her laugh or what makes them giggle.

Letting them win, and then when that teaching pays off and they actually win on their own, is a memory that will live forever in your mind. But such games also build self-esteem in the child which they will need as they grow older and take on more arduous tasks.

How To Play The Candyland Game

Using a brightly colored board and gingerbread pawns, players move around 134 spaces trying to find the Candyland king who is lost.

They will use the deck of cards and their gingerbread pawn to determine where they will land next in the race to find the king first.

They will travel through places like the Candy Cane Forest and Gum Drop Mountain and meet Candyland characters like Princess Lolly and Jolly in their competition to reach the goal first.

Gloppy the Molasses Monster, or as in the newer versions, Gloppy the Chocolate Monster, is really no monster at all but the enchanting owner of a field of chocolate.

Lord Licorice is a bit grumpy and he tries to block the path, all the while trying to turn Candyland into a land of licorice.

While in the original Candyland board game, backward moves were possible, in the newer versions, that option is not used. There are squares, however, where a player may get stuck and have to wait until they draw a card of that color until they are able to move again. These squares are marked with a dot and children try desperately to avoid landing there.
